It’s a weighty tome, with some equally heavy stories. As I read through, I’m struck by the diversity of locations, the many ways the theme of Feral Lands could be taken.
Without plot spoilers, the opener evokes the spirit of Arthur C. Clarke in the coolest of ways. Then we get into a story set on left side of America that resonates perfectly with my rural upbringing on the other side of the country. After that we plunge into Mexican jungles. Then I’ll bring you back to a mountain on the edge of the Appalachian Trail, and that’s just the first half!
But this is definitely a case of come for the wild locales, stay for the characters. There are some folks in this anthology you will want to root for, whom you will want to see daylight again or emerge healed from the trauma they carry with them. Will they? That’s the fun of reading!
